Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim resigned from his position on Friday. He submitted his resignation letter to Kolkata Municipal Corporation Chairperson Mala Roy in the afternoon. Hakim had sought permission from Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee before submitting his resignation.
Hakim became the Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation in 2018. Prior to this, the Mayors of Chandannagar Municipality and Bidhannagar Municipality had resigned for the same reason.
In a press conference after his resignation, Hakim said, 'I sought permission from the party leader (Mamata Banerjee). I told her I want to leave with dignity. She told me it's okay.'
Hakim claimed that he worked with dedication for the improvement of the Municipal Corporation. He said he had organized the Municipal Corporation and that someone might be dissatisfied with his work, but he took responsibility for his work and resigned today.
Earlier, on Wednesday, after the West Bengal Assembly elections, 60 out of 80 Trinamool Congress MLAs rebelled. They replaced Sobhan Deb Chattopadhyay, nominated by Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee, with Ritabrata Banerjee as the opposition leader. This decision effectively split Mamata's Trinamool Congress into two parts.
After the announcement of the Assembly results, Trinamool Congress MLAs and MPs started maintaining distance from Mamata. Mamata faced a significant defeat in the elections. Following this defeat, anger began to rise among the Trinamool Congress MLAs and MPs against party leader Mamata Banerjee and All India General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee.
