A South Korean court has sentenced former President Yun Suk-Yeol to 30 years in prison for sending a military drone to Pyongyang, North Korea. The Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of abusing power and aiding the enemy. The court stated that Yun was involved in the drone infiltration from the beginning, which occurred in October 2024. Yun denies all charges, claiming he did not order or approve the drone mission. His lawyers argue it was a response to North Korean provocations.
Yun, a former conservative leader and once the country's chief prosecutor, faces multiple court rulings following his impeachment. In February, another court sentenced him to life imprisonment for leading a coup attempt through martial law. He lost his presidency after the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment last year, leading to an interim election won by the current liberal President Lee Jae-myung.
Yun, currently in prison, has the option to appeal the latest ruling to a higher court.
