Europe is grappling with an unprecedented heatwave that has shattered temperature records across the continent. The extreme weather, driven by atmospheric patterns and exacerbated by global warming, has led to a significant increase in air conditioner sales as residents seek relief from the searing heat.

Record-Breaking Temperatures

France's national temperature indicator reached 29.8°C on Tuesday, the highest since measurements began in 1947. With four more French departments under the highest heat alert category, approximately 44 million people are affected. Temperatures are expected to soar between 39°C and 41°C from Brittany to the Paris region and much of the south-west.

Soaring AC Sales

The demand for air conditioners and fans has skyrocketed. Hypermarket operator Carrefour sold 30,000 units by 6:30 pm on Monday, a thousand times more than on a normal day. Sales on Amazon nearly doubled last week compared to the same period in 2025, and electronics outlet Fnac Darty reported double-digit growth.

Emergency Installations

Thierry, an electrician in south-west France, reported being overwhelmed by requests for "emergency" air-conditioning installations. Many residents are bypassing the usual bureaucratic processes to get immediate relief.

Widespread Heat Alerts

Italy's health ministry declared a red heatwave alert in 16 cities, including Milan and Rome. Poland, Croatia, and Hungary have also issued high-level heat warnings. The heatwave is expected to extend into eastern Europe in the coming days.

Climate Change Impact

A scientific study published this week indicates that the current heatwave is "significantly exacerbated by human-induced climate change," with temperatures 2 to 4°C higher than they would have been without climate change.
