The outbreak, declared on May 15, 2026, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment.
The outbreak has primarily affected the northeastern province of Ituri, which borders South Sudan and Uganda. Improved detection and testing have played a crucial role in identifying more infections, leading to a surge of around 1,000 cases in just 10 days. This brings the total number of cases across five provinces to 3,075.
The DRC is facing significant challenges in managing this outbreak. The region has been scarred by decades of violence, complicating response efforts. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the outbreak could last several more months. With no approved vaccine or treatment currently available, the focus remains on containment, improved detection, and supporting healthcare workers to mitigate the spread of the virus.
