US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen highlighted the significance of art in understanding Bangladeshi culture and people during the inauguration of Gallery Kaya's 22nd anniversary exhibition in Uttara, Dhaka. He praised Bangladeshi artists' creativity and noted that their artworks provide a vital opportunity for foreigners to comprehend the country and its people. Christensen mentioned that he and his wife have gained a deeper understanding of Bangladesh's culture and traditions through exposure to its art. He also underscored the role of art in bridging different cultures, noting that many participating artists have international experiences that influence their work while maintaining a Bangladeshi artistic identity.
Exhibition and Gallery Kaya's Journey
Gallery Kaya, established in 2004, has hosted 162 solo and group exhibitions, 10 art camps, 42 art trips, and 9 art workshops. The current exhibition features 73 artworks by 45 artists, showcasing a variety of mediums and spanning from 1957 to 2026. Notable artists include Ramkinkar Baij, M F Husain, K G Subramanyan, and many others from Bangladesh and India.
Artistic Perspectives
Gautam Chakrabarty, the founder of Gallery Kaya, spoke about the gallery's mission to create an open cultural space for both new and established artists. Monirul Islam, an artist, emphasized that the importance of art lies in the artist's vision and expression rather than the medium used. Shahid Kabir noted that the exhibition serves as an inspiration for new generations of artists.
