Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has expressed optimism that the memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed between Bangladesh and China during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visit to China will bring a qualitative change in Bangladesh's new media. Swapon signed four MoUs with the Chinese government, focusing on the exchange of experiences and knowledge in information management.
Speaking to the media, Swapon highlighted the agreements to conduct research on technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the media, leveraging China's advanced technological capabilities. He believes that these joint efforts will lead to significant improvements in the field of new media in Bangladesh.
Bilateral Agreements and High-Level Meetings
During the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, 17 MoUs were signed, with 13 in the presence of the two premiers. Six of these MoUs were related to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Swapon noted the high-level respect and importance given to the delegation by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Chinese Prime Minister, and the Chinese Parliament Speaker. He is confident that these relations will elevate Bangladesh's economy, technology, and international political status.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
The information minister mentioned that this was Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's first foreign visit as the elected Prime Minister. He praised China's sincerity and love, reflecting their commitment and affection for the Bangladeshi people.
Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that the visit would take the relations between the two countries to a qualitatively new level. Swapon recalled that the relations began under Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and were developed under late Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and are now set to reach new heights under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Malaysia and then China from June 21-26. He was accompanied by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, State Minister for Energy and Power Aninya Islam Amit, State Minister for Civil Aviation Rashiduzzaman Millat, and Prime Minister's Advisers Humayun Kabir, AKM Shamsul Islam, Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, and Mahadi Amin.
