In a miraculous event, a pen defied the stream to select Hazrat Zakariya as the guardian of Maryam, the daughter of Imran and Hannah. This divine intervention resolved a dispute among the caretakers of the Masjidul Aqsa.
Maryam, born to elderly parents who fervently prayed for a child, was dedicated to the service of the Masjidul Aqsa. As she grew, the question of her guardianship arose. According to tradition, the caretakers, known as Kahins, sought to take charge of her upbringing.
Hazrat Zakariya, a prophet and the husband of Maryam's aunt Yashir, was considered the most suitable guardian. However, a dispute emerged, leading to a lottery to determine the rightful guardian. In those times, the lottery was conducted using pens.
Each participant threw their pen into the water. The pen that moved against the current would indicate the winner. All pens floated with the stream, except Zakariya's, which moved in the opposite direction.
The lottery was repeated three times, and each time, Zakariya's name emerged, confirming the divine selection. It was unanimously decided that he had divine assistance, and thus, Maryam's guardianship was entrusted to him.
Zakariya arranged a room for Maryam near the Masjidul Aqsa where she spent her days in worship. At night, she would either stay with her aunt or Zakariya's wife. Miraculously, food from Jannah would appear for her, astonishing Zakariya.
