Magha Purnima, observed on February 5th, is a significant day in Buddhism as it marks when Buddha announced his upcoming Mahaparinirvana. On this day, Buddha declared the date of his passing at Vaishali's Chapal Chaitya. Buddhists commemorate this day with various religious activities.
Magha Purnima is one of the important full moon days in Buddhism. It is associated with Buddha's life events, including his announcement of Mahaparinirvana. Buddhists observe this day with Ashtashila (eight precepts), Buddha Puja, Sanghadan, flag hoisting, lighting lamps, and prayers for peace.
The day is also significant as Buddha gave his Pratimoksha Upadesha (precepts for monks) to the Sangha on Magha Purnima. Pratimoksha is a text containing rules for Buddhist monks, compiled from various Vinaya Pitaka texts.
Magha Purnima is not a day of joy for Buddhists, as it signifies the impending loss of Buddha. Though Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana on Vaisakhi Purnima, the announcement was made on Magha Purnima.
