Buddha Purnima, the principal religious festival for Buddhists, is being observed today. According to Buddhist tradition, this day marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Gautama Buddha around 2,500 years ago. Buddhists worldwide celebrate this Vesak full moon day as Buddha Purnima.
The core teachings of Buddha emphasize non-violence, equality, friendship, and coexistence. Buddha advocated that hostility can only be overcome with non-violence and that truth can dispel falsehood.
Buddhists across the country are celebrating the day with Buddha Puja, taking vows, offering food, and other traditional rituals. The Bangladesh Buddhist Federation has announced a day-long program at the Merul Badda International Buddhist Monastery, including Buddha Puja at 10 AM and a special discussion and cultural program at 6 PM.
Prime Minister Tareq Rahman exchanged greetings with Buddhist community leaders yesterday, emphasizing the government's commitment to ensuring a peaceful environment for all citizens regardless of religion or background. He highlighted the Five Precepts of Buddhism, which include refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxicants.
The General Secretary of the Bangladesh Buddhist Federation, Bhikkhu Sunandapriya, expressed hopes for an end to wars and violence globally and for equal rights and citizenship for all in Bangladesh.
