Christians in Bangladesh will observe the day with prayers and joyful events in accordance with their religious traditions. Typically, families celebrate by cutting cakes, preparing special meals, decorating Christmas trees, and exchanging gifts among children. Churches are also adorned with decorations and host special Christmas prayers.
According to Christian belief, Jesus Christ was born in a stable in Bethlehem, on the West Bank of Palestine, on this day. He was born to proclaim the glory of the Creator and to guide humanity towards truth and justice.
Yesterday, Wednesday, churches in Dhaka were seen decorated in colorful attire for Christmas. The Holy Rosary Church in Tejgaon and St. Christina Church in Mohammadpur showcased the festive vibrancy.
The Holy Rosary Church in Tejgaon will hold two Christmas prayers today—at 7 AM and 9 AM. St. Christina Church in Mohammadpur will have a prayer at 8 AM. Thousands are expected to attend the prayers at both churches.
Christians visiting the churches yesterday expressed their intention to participate in special Christmas prayers and religious music, calling for peace, love, and humanity. Many will light candles in silent remembrance of Jesus' life and ideals.
Father Kajol Purification, priest of St. Christina Church in Mohammadpur, stated that this Christmas, prayers will be offered for peace within oneself and the world. These prayers are for everyone, including Hindus, Muslims, and Christians.
Father Joyant S Gomes, priest of the Holy Rosary Church in Tejgaon, remarked that Jesus always worked to establish the social and human dignity of marginalized people. Through these efforts, he established justice and equality in the world. This year's prayers will focus on establishing peace in Bangladesh amidst changing circumstances, ensuring stability and democracy within the country.
On the occasion of Christmas, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus have issued separate messages. In their messages, they extended heartfelt greetings and congratulations to Christians on their grandest religious festival.
The President, in his message, said, 'Bangladesh is a land of communal harmony. People of all faiths have been freely practicing their religions and traditions here. On this auspicious day, I call upon everyone to strengthen this communal harmony and join hands in building a modern and progressive Bangladesh.'
The Chief Advisor, in his message, said, 'Jesus Christ was a seeker of truth, a messenger of humanity's liberation, and a beacon of light. Despite a hundred obstacles and adversities, he always preached the message of peace, truth, and justice. He imparted lessons of love, service, forgiveness, and greatness to all.'
The Chief Advisor called upon all Christians to be inspired by the great ideals of patriotism and humanity in realizing the dream of Bangladesh.
