The marriage of Ali and Fatima, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, is revered in Islamic tradition as a model of piety, simplicity, and mutual support. Despite facing significant hardships and living with minimal resources, they found spiritual contentment and built an exemplary family. Their household, marked by humility and devotion, produced notable figures including Hasan, Husayn, Zaynab, Umm Kulthum, and Muhsin.

Fatima grew up in the sacred environment of Mecca during the pre-prophetic period and the early challenging days of Islam. Her marriage to Ali, the fourth caliph of Islam, is considered an ideal for all. Even with very limited belongings and facing scarcity, they found inner peace and formed an ideal family under the guidance of the Prophet.

After the Hijra to Medina, proposals for Fatima's hand in marriage began to arrive. Abu Bakr and Umar were among the first to propose, but the Prophet remained silent, waiting for Allah's decision. Ali, hearing of the proposals, went to the Prophet's court in humility. When the Prophet asked if Ali had come regarding Fatima's marriage, Ali agreed. The Prophet inquired about the dowry, and Ali offered his iron armor, keeping his horse for battle needs. The armor was later bought by Uthman for 480 dirhams and gifted to Ali, upon which the Prophet offered prayers for Uthman's well-being.

The marriage was solemnized in the second year of the Hijra, after the Battle of Badr, in the presence of Muhajirun and Ansar companions. Asma bint Umais accompanied Fatima to her new home. The next morning, the Prophet visited Ali's home, sprinkled water on Ali and Fatima, and expressed his joy at their union, stating he had given his most beloved in marriage. He shed tears as he bade them farewell and offered prayers for their well-being.

Their life together was marked by simplicity and hardship. Ali mentioned that they had only a sheepskin mat for sleeping and used it to shade their camel that carried water. They had no servants. They often fasted and once alleviated their hunger with bread made from gold they found on the road, which the Prophet considered a blessing from Allah. Fatima's hands were blistered from grinding grain, and when she sought a servant from her father, the Prophet taught her a tasbih (prayer) instead, known later as Tasbih of Fatima.
