Police arrested Tareq Reza, central joint secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), in Jhenaidah following a lawsuit filed by a student leader. Reza was detained on Sunday evening near a community center on Kobi Sukanta Road in the city.
According to district NCP sources, Reza was arrested while heading to a press conference organized by the NCP at the Family Zone Community Center to protest the arrest of Jatiya Juba Shakti leader Oyon Rahman. Rahman was arrested in connection with the same case.
Jhenaidah Sadar Thana's duty officer, Sub-inspector Khairul Islam, confirmed the arrest.
The incident stems from a clash between student groups and NCP members following an egg-throwing incident at Jhenaidah's Puraton Collectorate Jame Mosque on Friday. Reza filed a case against 123 individuals, including student leaders, on May 22. In response, former district student leader Enamul Kabir filed a counter-case against Reza and 22 other NCP and anti-discrimination student movement leaders on May 23.
