DHAKA - Prime Minister's Information Advisor Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman stated today that the government is determined to ensure justice by bringing death-row convict Sheikh Hasina back to the country for a transparent trial. 'The government is committed to bringing Sheikh Hasina to justice. Her trial process will continue transparently. The people of this country want the death penalty given to her for her crime to be upheld. A formal request has already been sent to India for her extradition,' he said.
Extradition and Trial Process
Dr. Zahed clarified the government's position on Sheikh Hasina's extradition and trial process, stating that the government is not influenced by any political or geopolitical pressures. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have confirmed that India has been formally requested to extradite Sheikh Hasina for trial. 'We welcome her because we want to ensure justice in this country,' he added.
Reforms and Transparency
During the interim government, the ICT Act was reformed according to modern and global standards. Dr. Zahed mentioned that Sheikh Hasina will have the opportunity to defend herself with the best foreign lawyers and the trial process will be recorded with video cameras. Foreign observers are also welcome to ensure complete transparency.
Court Directives and Political Parties
Regarding the court's ban on disseminating Sheikh Hasina's statements through media and social media, Dr. Zahed clarified that this is a court directive, not an executive order. He urged political parties to participate in dialogue and parliamentary processes instead of debating the referendum on constitutional amendment. 'The opposition should try to include their demands in the amendment through discussions and present their arguments in parliament,' he said.
Urbanization and Floods
Addressing the issue of floods and waterlogging in various parts of the country, Dr. Zahed attributed the problem to long-term unplanned urbanization. He criticized the previous government for graft and unplanned development, stating that the current government is working to resolve this structural crisis.
