Former Sreepur Mayor Anichur Rahman passed away, leading to his sister's sudden death upon hearing the news.

Former Mayor of Sreepur Municipality, Anichur Rahman (65), passed away while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Uttara, Dhaka, on Sunday afternoon. His sister, Rashida Khatun (62), fell ill upon hearing the news and died on the way to the hospital.

Anichur Rahman's younger brother, Mujibur Rahman, confirmed the deaths to Prothom Alo. Anichur had been suffering from kidney issues, heart disease, and other complications for a long time and regularly underwent dialysis. His condition worsened during a dialysis session on Sunday, leading to his death around 4 PM. His sister fell ill immediately after learning of his death and passed away while being taken to the hospital.

Anichur Rahman was the organizational secretary of Gazipur District Awami League and the founding mayor of Sreepur Municipality. He was elected mayor for the fourth time in January 2021. Following the 2024 mass uprising, several cases were filed against him, and he was less visible in public thereafter.
