Former Member of Parliament and senior Awami League leader AKM Rahmatullah passed away on Wednesday morning at Square Hospital in Dhaka. He was 76. His daughter Mansura Rahmatullah confirmed his death to Prothom Alo, stating he died at 4:05 AM. His body was taken to his residence in Badda, Beraid. Family sources said he had been undergoing treatment at Square Hospital for several days.
A freedom fighter, Rahmatullah was a member of the Awami League's Advisory Council until his death. He was elected to parliament five times and served as the president of Dhaka North City Awami League. He was first elected to the 3rd National Parliament in 1986 from Dhaka-5 constituency and subsequently in 1996, 2008, 2014, and 2018.
His nephew Faruk Ahmed said the funeral prayer will be held at Beraid ground at 3:30 PM, followed by burial at Beraid graveyard.
