A case has been filed against 29 individuals, including former mayor Mohammad Manjur Alam and former MP Khadijatul Anwar, for a meeting and procession of the banned Chhatra League in Chittagong's Fatikchhari. The case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Fatikchhari police station on Friday night. An additional 80-90 unidentified individuals have been named as defendants. Police arrested two young men, Mohammad Zaman Babu (23) and Saiful Islam (25), from the scene on suspicion of involvement in the incident. The case alleges that the defendants were destabilizing the state, damaging state infrastructure, and preparing for conspiratorial activities under the direction of the former mayor and MP.
The case states that on Thursday morning, leaders and activists of the Awami League, Juba League, and Chhatra League held a torchlight procession in the Azimnagar area of Rosangiri Union's Ward 3. Upon noticing the police, the participants attempted to flee, discarding their torches. Police pursued and arrested the first and second defendants, while the others escaped. The arrested defendants reportedly confessed during preliminary interrogation that they had gathered under the direction of the former mayor and MP.
Four bamboo torches were seized from the scene in the presence of local witnesses. Fatikchhari police station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Rabiul Alam stated that the police filed the case against the arrested and fugitive defendants under the Anti-Terrorism Act for the banned Chhatra League's meeting and procession. Police operations to arrest the fugitive and unidentified defendants are ongoing.
