Burnham's Previous Efforts and Future Plans
Burnham, whose father has Alzheimer's, has long campaigned to fix the social care system. As health secretary under Gordon Brown between 2009 and 2010, he proposed the creation of a publicly funded National Care Service, similar to the NHS, but those plans did not materialize. Now, as prime minister, he aims to move quickly on reform, acknowledging that while bringing in a new system will 'take time,' he hopes to achieve'substantial change' during his tenure.
Additionally, Burnham addressed the need to reduce Britain's ballooning welfare bill. He suggested tightening conditions for accessing benefits to encourage people to return to work, emphasizing the importance of making some support conditional upon taking available opportunities. His predecessor, Keir Starmer, attempted to reform the welfare system but had to scale back changes due to opposition within his own party.
