In a surprising turn, acclaimed director Martin Scorsese has come out in support of artificial intelligence (AI) in Hollywood, a stance that contrasts with the concerns expressed by other industry heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Blunt, and Steven Spielberg. Scorsese, known for films such as 'Taxi Driver' and 'Goodfellas', has not only voiced his support but also joined German AI firm Black Forest Labs as an advisor. This move has reignited the debate about the role of AI in the future of cinema.
Scorsese's Long-standing Interest in Technology
Scorsese's interest in AI is not new. He has a history of experimenting with technology in his films. In 2011's 'Hugo', he extensively used 3D technology, and in 2019's 'The Irishman', he employed advanced de-aging technology. According to Scorsese, AI is just the next step in this technological evolution.
AI in Storyboard Creation
Scorsese revealed that he has already used AI to create storyboards for a new film. He believes that AI can help streamline the pre-production phase, saving time and reducing costs. He cited the famous 'Copa Cabana shot' from 'Goodfellas' as an example where AI could have expedited the planning process.
Mixed Reactions in Hollywood
Scorsese is not alone in his positive view of AI. James Cameron has joined the board of Stability AI, and Peter Jackson sees AI as another form of visual effects. However, not everyone shares this optimism. Guillermo del Toro has been one of the harshest critics, stating that he does not believe art can be created by an app.
AI's Growing Presence in Film Festivals
The presence of AI in cinema is also growing at film festivals. The Tribeca Film Festival will feature 'Dreams of Violets', a full-length docudrama entirely created using AI technology.
