The government has proposed a budget of 200 crore for the New Khuri Sports program in the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year to develop sports talent and infrastructure across 64 districts. The Finance Minister announced the initiative in the budget speech in the Jatiya Sangsad. The program aims to transform sports into a full-fledged economic sector by integrating sports, event management, broadcasting, sports goods, tourism, and services. As part of the plan, sports villages will be constructed in all 64 districts, with preliminary designs already prepared for 10 districts. The initiative will also enhance international cooperation through 'sports diplomacy'. Under the New Khuri Sports program, scholarships will be provided to talented sports students aged 12 to 14. Currently, eight sports—football, cricket, kabaddi, athletics, badminton, chess, swimming, and martial arts—are included in the program. The Finance Minister mentioned that 168,622 players have registered for the program, including 121,492 boys and 47,130 girls. The government has already provided sports allowances to 300 athletes to establish sports as a profession. The goal is to achieve an acceptable international position in several sports by 2030. Regular sports competitions and tournaments will be organized at various levels to ensure every student has the opportunity to participate in at least one sport.
