The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) have signed a strategic partnership agreement aimed at strengthening the global footprint of Bangladesh's apparel industry through joint market expansion initiatives.

Memorandum of Understanding Signed

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the BGMEA office in Dhaka, with BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan and HSBC Bangladesh CEO Md Mahbub ur Rahman signing on behalf of their respective organisations. The agreement seeks to diversify export destinations beyond traditional markets by expanding Bangladesh's presence in Asia.

Major Apparel Roadshow Planned

Under the agreement, the two sides will jointly organise a major apparel roadshow in Hong Kong to connect Bangladeshi exporters with international buyers, brands and global business partners. The initiative aims to attract new sourcing partners who are not currently importing garments from Bangladesh, thereby widening the country's export base.

Leveraging Bangladesh Textile Expo

The partnership will also leverage the upcoming Bangladesh Textile Expo (BATEXPO) to promote the country's apparel and textile sector at home and abroad. This collaboration is expected to focus on exploring new export markets, strengthening Bangladesh's position in global supply chains and showcasing the industry's progress in sustainability and modernisation.

Key Statements from Leaders

Speaking at the signing ceremony, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan highlighted HSBC's extensive global banking network and strong relationships with international buyers as key factors that would help attract new sourcing partners. HSBC Bangladesh CEO Md Mahbub ur Rahman described the ready-made garment (RMG) sector as the backbone of Bangladesh's economy and reaffirmed the bank's commitment to supporting its long-term growth.

Focus on Market Diversification

Mahmud Hasan Khan and Md Mahbub ur Rahman stressed the importance of research on changing global sourcing patterns and urged BGMEA to prioritise key areas, including market diversification, supply chain efficiency and increasing Bangladesh's share in the global apparel market.
