The proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year is intended to support business and investment. However, the actual success of the budget will depend on meeting high revenue targets and implementing the announced reforms. Dhaka Chamber President Tasqeen Ahmed shared this feedback during a press conference in Motijheel yesterday evening following the budget announcement.
Dhaka Chamber noted that the proposed budget is 19 percent larger than the previous fiscal year's budget. However, increasing the revenue target by 30 percent, as announced, is quite challenging given the current economic situation. Increased reliance on banking sector loans to fill budget deficits could hinder private sector credit flow and bank sector recovery.
Regarding tax management, Dhaka Chamber mentioned both relief and some disappointment. They welcomed the decision to count withholding tax as advance tax, a long-standing demand of businessmen. The organization also welcomed the decision to expand the tax base without increasing the VAT rate.
