The upazila administration in Basail, Tangail district, has returned over Taka 1.25 crore to the state treasury after successfully completing part of the Sundari Canal re-excavation project while ensuring quality standards and maximizing savings of public funds. A total of Taka 14,3,52,708 had been allocated for the re-excavation of a 4.2-kilometre stretch of the Sundari Baik Canal, extending from Habla Uttarpara to Aroha Jiboneshwar via Choyshat Bill. After completing 1.6 kilometres of excavation in accordance with the required technical standards, Taka 1,25,42,976 remained unspent. The unused funds were subsequently deposited into the state treasury following government regulations.
The canal restoration has significantly improved water flow and irrigation facilities, creating new opportunities for local farmers to cultivate three crops annually. As part of efforts to protect the environment and conserve water resources, the administration also planted 100 saplings of different species along the canal embankment.
The project was closely supervised by Basail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Iqbal Hossain, Project Implementation Officer Saiful Islam and Upazila Engineer Kazi Fattahur Rahman. UNO Md. Iqbal Hossain said the project had been implemented while maintaining quality standards and ensuring the efficient use of public resources. The unspent Taka 1,25,42,976 had been returned to the state treasury in accordance with government rules, he added.
The UNO expressed hope that the benefits of the canal re-excavation would support local farmers and agriculture for many years to come. The project’s efficient use of funds and return of excess money to the treasury highlights a commitment to fiscal responsibility and effective public resource management.
