Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam announced that Bangladesh Railway aims to increase its share of the country’s total domestic freight from the current 3 to 4 percent to a significantly higher percentage. Speaking in Jatiya Sangsad, the minister outlined the government’s short, medium, and long-term strategies to expand freight handling capacity and revenue.
Key Initiatives to Boost Freight Transport
The minister highlighted several key initiatives. These include operating more freight trains on major commercial routes, procuring new freight wagons and locomotives, and expanding regional and sub-regional railway connectivity. The government also plans to establish Inland Container Depots (ICDs) and logistics hubs, and ensure the commercial utilization of mega railway projects.
