A court in Faridpur has sentenced Shawkat Mia to life imprisonment for raping a 9-year-old schoolgirl in Saltha upazila in 2020. District and Sessions Judge Abul Basar pronounced the verdict in the presence of the convict. Mia, 38, was also fined Taka 1 lakh, with an additional year of rigorous imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

According to the prosecution, on May 22, 2020, the 9-year-old victim, a 3rd grade student, went to visit her family's vegetable field near their house in Baro Bangrail village. Neighbor Shawkat Mia forcibly took the child to a nearby jute field and raped her.

Legal Proceedings

Locals rescued the child after finding her in a bloody and lifeless condition and admitted her to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. The victim's father filed a rape case with Saltha Police Station the day after the incident, naming Shawkat Mia as the sole accused. Advocate Archana Das, the state's lawyer, stated that after a long judicial process involving witness testimonies and arguments, the court delivered the verdict.
