Five people were killed in two separate landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Bandarban's Lama upazila. The victims included three members of a family and a husband and wife. The landslides occurred at dawn in the Mission Para (Paglir Jhiri) area under Aziz Nagar Union.

Details of the Incidents

In one incident, Md. Yunus (40), his wife Ranu Akter (35), and their five-year-old son, Md. Soleman, were killed. In the other incident, Md. Jewel (34) and his wife Kulsuma Akter (25) lost their lives. Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing cries for help, but all five victims had already died by the time they were rescued from beneath the debris.

Rescue and Recovery Efforts

Fire service personnel and police later recovered the bodies and carried out rescue operations in the affected area. Md Wahabul Islam Khandaker, a local resident, confirmed that five people, including a child, had been killed in the landslides. He added that the bodies had been recovered and the necessary legal procedures were underway.

Ongoing Rainfall and Risk of Further Landslides

Continuous rainfall has significantly increased the risk of further landslides across Lama and other parts of the country. Newly inundated areas have disrupted normal life, and road communication has been severely affected. Power supply and mobile network services have also been disrupted in several upazilas, hampering communication.

Urgent Call for Safety Measures

The local administration has urged residents living in landslide-prone areas to move to safer shelters. However, many have yet to comply with the directive. The situation remains critical as the heavy rainfall continues, posing a threat to more lives and property.
