State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam today called for a nationwide tree plantation drive to protect the environment, urging people from all walks of life to join the government's afforestation campaign. He made the call while inaugurating the divisional tree plantation campaign and month-long tree fair at the Circuit House ground in Khulna. The minister emphasized that broad public participation was essential to make the programme a success.

Campaign Details and Goals

Held under the slogan, "Let's Decorate the Country with Trees, Bangladesh First," the campaign is part of the government's effort to expand the country's green cover. The minister said the government aims to plant 25 crore saplings over the next five years and that about 1.7 crore saplings had already been planted nationwide by government and private organisations as of July 2.

Environmental Concerns and Public Awareness

Warning that excessive use of polythene is a major cause of environmental degradation and waterlogging, he stressed the need to raise public awareness to reduce its use. "Our environment is under threat. Tree plantation is the most effective way to restore ecological balance," he said, adding that the government also plans to plant nearly 2 crore keora trees.

Benefits of Tree Plantation

Describing trees as humanity's "best friend," Sheikh Faridul urged people to plant fruit-bearing, timber, medicinal and ornamental trees on all available vacant land, noting that trees provide both environmental and economic benefits.

Event Participation and Activities

Khulna Deputy Commissioner Hoore Jannat presided over the function. Among others, Khulna-1 MP Amir Ejaz Khan, Divisional Commissioner Md. Abdullah Harun, Khulna City Corporation Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan, Khulna Range DIG Md. Rezaul Haque, Conservator of Forests Imran Ahmed, Satkhira District BNP Joint Convener Dr. Moniruzzaman, Khulna Press Club General Secretary Tarikul Islam, Nursery Owners' Association President Md. Badrul Alam Royal and Divisional Forest Officer A.Z.M. Hasanur Rahman addressed the programme. The event was jointly organised by the Khulna district administration and the Khulna Sundarbans West Forest Division.

Tree Fair and Public Engagement

The minister also distributed saplings among students. Earlier, a colourful procession led by the minister marched from the Khulna Collectorate premises through different city roads before ending at the fair venue. The month-long tree fair will remain open daily from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm and features 62 stalls, including one operated by the Sundarbans West Forest Division.
