Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) today observed its monthly Cleaning Day simultaneously in all 75 wards while organizing an awareness rally to promote public awareness against water logging and environmental pollution. The program was inaugurated at Shahbag by the DSCC Administrator, freedom fighter Abdus Salam, who also formally launched the Cleaning Day activities.
Public Awareness and Participation
The initiative is part of the corporation’s ongoing efforts to increase public awareness and participation in waste management and dengue prevention. Addressing the event, Abdus Salam highlighted that transforming Dhaka into a clean and green city requires public awareness and collective social initiatives. He stressed that responsible civic behavior is crucial to addressing water logging, improving waste management, and reducing environmental pollution.
Community Involvement and Waste Management
Abdus Salam noted that changing citizens' attitudes is essential for removing Dhaka from the list of the world’s most polluted cities. He emphasized that there is no excuse for indiscriminate waste disposal and urged business owners to install waste bins in front of their establishments. The administrator also called on residents not to blame the city corporation alone for water logging, noting that even a single polythene bag or mattress blocking a drain could cause flooding across an entire neighborhood.
Special Programmes and Tree Plantation
A special crash program on mosquito control and waste management has been introduced in all 75 wards on the first Saturday of every month. In addition to the routine cleaning drive, the program will focus on cleaning neglected areas and unclogging blocked drains. Abdus Salam also highlighted the importance of extensive tree plantation to reduce carbon dioxide levels and increase oxygen supply in the city. Following the speeches, an awareness rally marched through major roads and key areas of the capital, distributing leaflets on water logging, proper waste management practices, and the harmful impacts of plastic pollution.

DSCC Chief Executive Officer Khaybar Rahman attended the program as a special guest. The event was also attended by Jamal Uddin, Executive Director of the Bidyanondo Foundation, along with members of various social organizations, environmental activists, students, volunteers, officials, and employees of the DSCC and media representatives.
