Absconding Defendants
All three defendants were absconding at the time of the verdict, prompting the court to issue arrest warrants against them based on the original sentencing order.
Background of the Case
The case originated on the night of October 24, 2018, when a team from the Chattogram Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police, acting on a confidential tip-off, conducted a search of a mini truck in the Firingibazar Bridgeghat area of Kotwali Police Station and seized 20,000 contraband Yaba tablets. Abdur Rahim Swapan and Sohel were arrested from the spot during the raid.
Investigation and Charges
During their interrogation, Abdur Rahim Swapan and Sohel revealed that the absconding accused had instructed them to transport the Yaba consignment from Teknaf to Feni for sale. Following the police investigation, a charge-sheet was submitted to the court against the three individuals, and the trial commenced.
Significance and Implications
This case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh to combat the illegal drug trade. The sentencing of the defendants serves as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities and highlights the judiciary's commitment to addressing drug-related crimes. The issuance of arrest warrants for the absconding defendants indicates the court's determination to ensure that all individuals involved in the crime are brought to justice.
