Wes Streeting has been appointed as the new UK defence minister by Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Streeting, who previously served as health minister, stepped down in May due to a loss of confidence in then-premier Keir Starmer. In his new role, Streeting emphasized the importance of national security and pledged to support the armed forces and international allies, particularly Ukraine.

Streeting, aged 43, is known for his working-class background and position on the right flank of the Labour Party. He gained national prominence during the 2024 general election and had considered challenging Burnham for the party leadership before withdrawing. Streeting replaces John Healey, who was appointed as the new finance minister.

Healey resigned as defence secretary last month, criticizing the government's defence budget. In his resignation letter, he stated that the government had been unable to commit the necessary resources for national defence amid rising threats.

Streeting's appointment comes at a critical time for UK defence policy, with ongoing international tensions and the need for robust national security measures. His experience in government and commitment to the armed forces are expected to play a significant role in shaping the UK's defence strategy.
