With a bit of planning, it is possible to explore Seoul, Busan, and other attractions in South Korea within a reasonable budget. Here are 10 effective tips to save money while traveling in South Korea, shared by Junayed Azim Chowdhury, who recently returned from a trip.
1. Apply for Visa Yourself
You can complete the entire visa process for South Korea, including the official visa fee, for around 5,000 BDT. Travel agencies charge an additional 3,500 to 5,000 BDT as a service fee. Visit the South Korean visa portal (www.visa.go.kr) to fill out the e-form, print it, and submit it along with necessary documents at the South Korean Embassy in Dhaka. The most crucial document is the last three years' tax return paper, which is mandatory for a Korean visa. Currently, an appointment is not required. After filling out the form and gathering all necessary documents, you can submit the visa application by standing in line on any working day. The visa fee must be paid on the same day. Once the visa processing is complete, you need to collect your passport. The entire process usually takes 3 to 15 working days.
2. Book Flights in Advance
Airfare is one of the biggest expenses of traveling to South Korea. Booking international flights 2 to 4 months in advance usually yields the best prices. Last-minute bookings often result in higher prices. For the Dhaka to Seoul route, ticket prices tend to rise rapidly during peak seasons such as the cherry blossom season in March-April or the autumn season in October-November. During these peak seasons, return tickets can cost between 120,000 to 180,000 BDT or more. On the other hand, during the off-season, tickets can be found for around 60,000 to 90,000 BDT, especially with airlines like China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, or Air China.
3. Use the Discover Seoul Pass
The Discover Seoul Pass can be a valuable companion for exploring Seoul affordably and stress-free. This card offers one-way travel from Incheon Airport to Seoul via AREX train or K-Limousine bus, free entry to over 70 popular tourist attractions in Seoul, and even unlimited high-speed internet access for the entire duration. Essentially, it is an all-in-one travel solution for exploring Seoul. You can purchase a 3 to 5-day package online from www.discoverseoulpass.com or www.klook.com. The cost can range from approximately 4,500 to 11,000 BDT (1 BDT = 12.12 Korean Won).
4. Choose Budget-Friendly Accommodations
Myeong-dong is the most popular area for tourists in South Korea, offering easy access to the airport and most attractions, but hotel prices are relatively higher. To save on accommodation, consider staying in the Hongdae area, which offers direct train access from the airport, great cafes, street food, and nightlife. With a T-money card, you can easily explore popular spots in the city using the metro and city buses. Dongdaemun is another budget-friendly option, and Haeundae Beach is a good choice for staying near the beach in Busan. For an even more budget-friendly option, consider the Somiyon area.
5. Carry a Reusable Water Bottle
Small expenses can add up during travel, and one common expense is drinking water. Most hotels, metro stations, and public places in South Korea have free water dispensers. Carrying a reusable water bottle allows you to refill it easily.
6. Explore Street Food Markets
Eating at a regular restaurant can cost around 15,000 to 30,000 Korean Won (approximately 1,200 to 2,400 BDT) per meal. However, street food markets offer delicious Korean food at a much lower cost. In Seoul's Myeongdong, Hongdae, or various street markets in Busan, you can find popular dishes for 3,000 to 6,000 Won. Street food vendors pay special attention to cleanliness from cooking to serving.
7. Opt for Express Buses Over Bullet Trains
The Korea Train Express (KTX) bullet train is the fastest and most comfortable way to travel between cities, but it is relatively expensive. Express buses offer a much cheaper alternative to the same destinations. South Korean express buses are comfortable, clean, and punctual, making them an excellent option for budget travelers.
8. Use Public Transport
Taxis in South Korea are relatively expensive, especially at night or for long distances. Using taxis daily can quickly increase your trip budget. On the other hand, the metro and city bus systems in Seoul and Busan are modern, clean, and punctual. Almost all tourist spots are easily accessible by metro or bus. Stations have English signs and route maps, making navigation easy for foreign tourists.
9. Shop at Discount Stores
Retail chain shop Daiso offers almost all necessary items at very low prices. Most products cost between 1,000 to 5,000 Korean Won, allowing you to purchase travel items, charger adapters, umbrellas, water bottles, skincare products, stationery, and small souvenirs on a tight budget.
10. Plan Your Itinerary Wisely
Many travelers move from one end of the city to the other daily, increasing both time and cost. Try to visit nearby places on the same day. For example, Myeongdong, Namsan, and Dongdaemun can be visited in one day, as can Hongdae and Itaewon. This reduces long-distance travel, saves money, and allows you to see more places in less time.
