In an effort to combat Dhaka's chronic traffic congestion, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is set to introduce low-cost 'plug-and-play' cameras. These cameras will supplement the existing AI-powered traffic surveillance system, allowing for broader coverage at a reduced cost. Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md Anisur Rahman highlighted the need for quicker expansion of monitoring to enforce traffic laws more effectively. The new cameras are significantly cheaper, making wider deployment feasible.
Enhancing Surveillance with Affordable Technology
The introduction of these new cameras comes approximately two months after DMP began using AI-based cameras to automatically detect traffic violations. Anisur Rahman noted that while the AI cameras have proven effective, their high cost has limited their deployment. The 'plug-and-play' cameras offer a cost-effective solution to monitor more roads and strengthen traffic discipline.
Addressing Dhaka's Traffic Challenges
Dhaka's traffic congestion is driven by several factors, including mixed traffic, a rapid increase in vehicle numbers, unregulated auto-rickshaws, unfit vehicles, and the absence of a modern public transport network. Unsafe pedestrian behavior, such as crossing roads outside designated areas, further exacerbates the problem. DMP currently manages around 25 major intersections with officers deployed according to traffic patterns. However, Rahman emphasized that technology will play an increasingly important role in meeting the demands of a growing city.
