Lamine Yamal turned 19 on Monday, but the Barcelona prodigy's mind is set firmly on the upcoming World Cup semi-final against France. Despite the magnitude of the match, Yamal insists he feels no fear and remains calm as Spain prepares to face their formidable opponents.
Yamal's comments have drawn attention after Spain's 2-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium. Following the win, he suggested that France, rather than Spain, should be 'afraid' given La Roja's recent victories. At a press conference in Dallas, Yamal addressed these remarks, explaining, 'I was asked if I was afraid of France, and I said no. We are European champions. It's simply football.'
The young star marked his birthday by purchasing a chunky, jewel-encrusted necklace, which he wore to the press conference. However, his true birthday wish is a win against France and a place in the World Cup final. 'I haven't received many gifts yet. The best gift would be a win on Tuesday and a trip to New York,' he said.
Although Yamal has only scored once in the tournament so far, he is determined to add to his tally against France. 'I don't focus on goals, but it's always special to score in a match like this. I accept the challenge. That's why I came here,' he promised, anticipating a 'beautiful match for the spectators.'
Acknowledging the significance of Tuesday's game, Yamal remains relaxed. 'There are far more difficult situations in life than a football match, so I'm calm,' he said. 'I don't feel any extra pressure; I'll go out and play like always and give my all for the team.'
