South African midfielder Jayden Adams, who represented his country at the ongoing World Cup, died on Saturday at the age of 25, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie announced. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Promising Career Cut Short

Adams played in all three of South Africa's group-stage matches at the World Cup but did not feature in the knockout defeat by Canada. Born in Cape Town, he began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before joining CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.

Investigation Underway

Police have opened an investigation after a 25-year-old man's body was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Recent Family Tragedy

Adams' death comes less than a month after the passing of his grandmother, on the eve of South Africa's Group A match against Czechia at Atlanta Stadium. Despite this personal loss, Adams started in the match and gave his all, according to the South African Football Association.

National Mourning

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed profound shock and a heavy heart over Adams' passing, stating that South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents. The nation mourns the loss of a promising athlete who had a bright future ahead of him.
