Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon announced today that the government has drastically reduced the broadcasting cost of the FIFA World Cup 2026 to nearly zero. This was achieved by directly purchasing the media rights from FIFA, eliminating the need for costly intermediaries and ending the irregularities and corruption associated with previous tournaments.
Cost-Effective Policy
Swapon credited the far-sighted and cost-effective policy of the government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, for this achievement. He noted that successful sub-licensing played a crucial role in bringing down the broadcasting cost. In stark contrast, nearly Tk 140 crore was spent through intermediaries during the Qatar World Cup 2022.
Transparency and Efficiency
The minister made these remarks during a press conference held at the Press Information Department (PID) in Dhaka. He presented a comparative analysis of the broadcasting costs between the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, highlighting the government's commitment to transparency and efficiency in contrast to the previous tournament's broadcasting rights purchase.
