Arguably the greatest all-rounder of all time, Sir Garfield Sobers has died at the age of 89. West Indies Cricket announced his passing on Friday, marking the end of an era in cricket history.

Iconic Career and Achievements

Sobers played 93 Tests between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and taking 235 wickets at 34.03 runs each. His remarkable career included numerous records, such as becoming the first player to hit six sixes in one over and scoring a then-world record 365 not out in a Test match against Pakistan in 1958.

Tributes Pour In

Tributes from around the world have poured in, honoring Sobers's legacy. West Indies Cricket posted on X: 'A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers.' The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) described him as 'a true icon of the game and one of cricket's greatest-ever all-rounders.'

Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott praised Sobers, stating, 'He was like a panther with a purposeful, loping and confident walk. I just loved the way Garry walked out to bat.' Indian cricket players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also paid tribute during Sobers's visit in 2024.
