Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, considered a divine avatar sent to liberate humanity from the tyranny of King Kansa. Born in the dark prison cell of his maternal uncle, Kansa, Krishna's birth is marked by miraculous events and is a symbol of hope and salvation.
The earliest mention of Krishna is found in the Chandogya Upanishad from the 7th century BCE. Detailed accounts of his life and miracles are documented in texts like the Vishnu Purana and Harivamsa. Modern scholar Albrecht Weber also contributed significant research on Krishna in his 1874 book.
Krishna's birth during the Bhadra month's Krishna Paksha Ashtami is celebrated as Janmashtami. Devotees believe that observing fasts and rituals on this day purifies the mind, fosters virtues, and leads to spiritual liberation after death.
