LGRD and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned against the politics of division using religion. Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized by Bangladesh Union Parishad Chairmen and Members Association, Fakhrul emphasized that although Muslims constitute the majority of the population, every citizen enjoys equal importance in Bangladesh. He stressed that there is no room for undermining followers of any religion.
"Attempts are being made to divide us politically in the name of religion. Although we are the majority, we must not demean people of other faiths. Every religion deserves equal respect. The state belongs to everyone. If you are a chairman, you should attend Durga Puja as well as Eid celebrations. Therefore, division must not be allowed," he told the UP chairmen and members.
Fakhrul criticized the disbanded Awami League, stating that it has caused significant damage to democratic institutions. He mentioned efforts to pass a law ensuring that elected public representatives cannot be suspended unless wrongdoing is proven. He also highlighted the poor monthly allowances given to UP chairmen and members, promising to discuss their problems with the Prime Minister.
With local government elections approaching, Fakhrul assured that elections at the union level will be conducted impartially, with neither BNP nor Jamaat members receiving any special advantage. He emphasized that candidates must earn victory through the love and support of the people, as free and fair elections are the foundation of democracy.
After the elections, Fakhrul announced the formation of a national organization of chairmen and members, with the Prime Minister attending their council. He also discussed the government's development programs, including the Family Card programme, waiving agricultural loans, and initiating canal excavation projects, hoping these initiatives would improve the lives of ordinary people. Fakhrul emphasized the need to empower UP chairmen and members, stating that strong development cannot be achieved solely through government officials.
