Tech stocks led Asian markets higher on Thursday, driven by renewed investor optimism about the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. This uplift comes despite recent concerns over elevated valuations and the timing of returns on trillions invested in the sector. Major indices in South Korea and Japan, previously hit by these concerns, saw significant gains, with Seoul up more than four percent at one point and Tokyo also rising. This bounce was spearheaded by rallies in chip giants like SK hynix and Samsung.

Simultaneously, oil prices continued to rally amid heightened Middle East tensions. Brent crude jumped more than three percent, breaking back above $95 per barrel, as US President Donald Trump threatened retaliatory strikes against Iran for attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned of a reciprocal response, further escalating the situation. Additionally, Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed to have struck two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, adding to the regional instability.

The combination of tech sector optimism and geopolitical tensions has created a complex market environment. Investors are closely watching upcoming earnings reports from major tech firms like Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon for insights into their AI spending and revenue strategies. Analysts emphasize that the next phase of the AI trade may favor companies demonstrating strong returns on their investments rather than merely high spending.

The escalating conflict in the Middle East has also raised concerns about inflation and potential Federal Reserve interest rate hikes. With oil prices on the rise and the US-Iran peace deal collapsing, investors are turning their attention to next week's Federal Reserve policy meeting for guidance. Additionally, the yen hit a fresh four-decade low against the dollar, driven by concerns over Japan's monetary policy and speculation about imminent Fed rate increases.

The dual dynamics of tech sector recovery and geopolitical risks underscore the volatile nature of current market conditions. As investors navigate these uncertainties, the performance of tech stocks and the trajectory of oil prices will remain key focal points.
