Tangail Court Issues Life Sentence to Heroin Trafficker

In a significant legal action against drug crimes, a court in Tangail has sentenced Hossain Ali to life imprisonment for heroin trafficking. The verdict was delivered by District and Sessions Judge Hafizur Rahman on Monday afternoon. Ali, 35, was also fined Taka 50,000, with an additional one year in jail in default of payment. Another accused, Hiru Mia, received a five-year rigorous imprisonment sentence.

Hossain Ali, son of Ram Khan from Kaharta village under Sakhipur upazila, and Hiru Mia, alias Haider, 55, son of Badsha Mia from Ward No-6 in Sakhipur municipality, were arrested by a team from the District Detective Branch (DB) of Police near the Kalia Union Land Office in Sakhipur on January 22, 2025. Police recovered 90 grams of heroin from Ali and 10 grams from Mia during the operation.

Two other accused, Alhaj Mia and Sumi Akter from Ward No. 4 of Sakhipur municipality, managed to flee the scene after learning about the police raid. The following day, DB Police Sub-Inspector Nuruzzaman filed a case against the accused under the Narcotics Control Act with Sakhipur Police Station.

The court framed charges against the accused on October 7, 2025. A total of nine witnesses testified during the trial. Notably, Hossain Ali, who was released on bail during the case proceedings, has been absconding. Hiru Mia was present in court during the verdict and was later sent to the district jail.

This verdict underscores the judiciary's commitment to combating drug trafficking, a persistent issue in the region. The life sentence handed down to Hossain Ali serves as a stern warning to potential offenders, highlighting the severe consequences of engaging in drug-related crimes.
