Farmers in Sathia Upazila are facing significant losses as they are getting only 15 taka per kg for green chilies, despite a bumper harvest. The increased supply has driven down prices, making it difficult for farmers to cover their costs.
Ayub Ali Sardar, a farmer from Baya village, said, 'Even though the harvest is good, the price of green chilies has fallen, leading to losses. The cost of labor and transportation is not being covered by the selling price.'
The agriculture office reports that 2,270 hectares of land have been cultivated with green chilies this season, with a production target of 23,835 tons. Despite the good weather and high production, the current market price is insufficient for farmers to make a profit.
