Abdur Rahim, accused of raping a 9-year-old schoolgirl in Netrakona's Kendua upazila, was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from a house in Gazipur on Thursday evening. He was handed over to Kendua police station on Friday morning.
According to police, the girl's family, and local sources, the incident occurred last Saturday afternoon when the girl went to fetch a cow from a nearby haor. Abdur Rahim allegedly raped her when he found her alone. The girl's mother found her under a tree after she was late returning home.
The girl was initially treated by a local village doctor and later admitted to Netrakona 250-bed District Hospital for advanced treatment. The girl's father filed a case against Abdur Rahim on Tuesday.
Local influential figures allegedly attempted to hush up the matter and offered the girl's family 50,000 taka, but they refused. Kendua police station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mehedi Maksud confirmed the arrest and said Abdur Rahim will be produced in court.
The girl has since returned home and is recovering. OC Maksud also stated that if local influential figures Abu Taher and Abu Bakkar are found involved, legal action will be taken against them.
