Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman announced that extrajudicial killings have nearly reached zero under the present government. Speaking at a consultation meeting on 'Human Rights Violations and Victims' Access to Justice' held at the CIRDAP auditorium, he stated, 'We can say that over the past few months under the present government, extrajudicial killings have almost come down to zero.'
Minister's Remarks on Human Rights
The minister emphasized the government's zero-tolerance policy towards enforced disappearances. 'As for enforced disappearances, whenever a reported case has come to our notice, we have taken it very seriously. I have internally instructed officials to maintain zero tolerance towards such incidents,' he said.
Judicial Independence and Political Cases
Asaduzzaman stressed the importance of a transparent process in appointing judges, arguing that an independent and credible judiciary can only be ensured through such measures. He added, 'The judiciary becomes weakened when judges are unable to stand firm and uphold their independence. Only when judges of integrity and competence are appointed can we have the independent and transparent judiciary that people expect.'
Regarding politically motivated cases, the minister said the government has been working relentlessly to withdraw such cases and that the process has now reached its final stage. He said the government is trying to break away from the cycle of political vindictiveness. 'Under the leadership of our Prime Minister, we believe we will gradually move forward with all necessary reforms. But we need a little more time,' the minister said.
