A court in Tangail has sentenced Waz Uddin to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for using counterfeit currency. The court also imposed a fine of TK 50,000, with an additional one-year simple imprisonment in default of payment. Judge Md. Hafizur Rahman of Tangail Special Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict.
Incident and Arrest
On the morning of June 27, 2021, Waz Uddin, 48, son of Achhar Uddin of Fatepur village under Mirzapur upazila, went to a shop and purchased four bottles of Speed, a soft drink, paying with a TK 1,000 note. The shopkeeper, suspecting the note to be counterfeit, showed it to others present at the shop. Local residents informed Delduar Police Station, leading to Waz Uddin's arrest. Police recovered four more counterfeit TK 1,000 notes from his possession.
Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, the shopkeeper, Joyen Uddin of Delduar Paschim Para village, filed a case under the Special Powers Act with Delduar Police Station. After completing the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against Waz Uddin on March 2, 2022. The case was heard based on evidence and witness testimonies.
Court Verdict
Judge Md. Hafizur Rahman of Tangail Special Tribunal-1 sentenced Waz Uddin to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fined him TK 50,000. The convict was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced and was later sent to Tangail jail.
