Six individuals were sentenced by a mobile court for attempting to sell horse meat as beef in Gaibandha's Sadullapur upazila. Local residents caught them slaughtering horses and selling the meat, leading to their arrest and subsequent sentencing.
The incident occurred on Friday morning in Khodd Rasulpur village of Jamalpur Union. Meat was being cut in a room belonging to Khayrul Islam, arousing suspicion among locals due to the unusual activity. Upon investigation, they found horse meat being prepared for sale as beef.
Local residents informed the Sadullapur police, who seized the meat from six horses. The six suspects were handed over to the police by the locals. The seized meat was buried in a vacant plot in the village in the presence of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and police.
UNO Mahmudul Hasan confirmed that the seized meat was indeed horse meat. The six suspects admitted to the crime during preliminary interrogation. The mobile court sentenced two of them to six months in jail each, and the other four to three months in jail each, along with a fine of Tk 5,000 each.
