A Dhaka court today ordered the arrest of former Member of Parliament (MP) from Narail-1 constituency, BM Kabirul Haque (Mukti), in a case related to the alleged attempt to murder a madrasa student during the 2024 July Mass Uprising. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam issued the order after police produced Kabirul before the court and requested his arrest. The court subsequently remanded him to jail.
The case documents indicate that anti-discrimination student movement activists organized a rally in the Banshtola area, south of Bhatara Police Station, on July 19, 2024. The rally was attacked, resulting in madrasa student Nazim Uddin being shot in the head. A total of 180 pellets struck his head, with 127 later removed.
Nazim’s aunt filed the case with Gulshan Police Station following the incident. The case has significant implications, reflecting the ongoing tensions and violence that marked the 2024 mass uprising.
Kabirul Haque's arrest underscores the judicial system's efforts to address past violence and hold individuals accountable, a crucial step towards ensuring justice and stability in Bangladesh.
