The Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) has decided to remove over 1,000 buses currently operating without valid fitness certificates from Dhaka's streets as soon as possible. The decision was made during a view-exchange meeting on 'Bus Route Rationalization' held at the DTCA conference room.
Route Rationalization and Cancellation
The meeting also decided to take steps to cancel all inoperative bus routes in the metropolitan area. Currently, there are 418 approved bus routes, but a DTCA survey identified that only 98 routes are in operation. Necessary measures will be taken regarding the remaining inactive routes.
Consensus on Routes and Fitness Certificates
The meeting said that approximately 60 bus routes are sufficient to meet the commuters' demand in the capital, with consensus reached on 32 routes. Decisions on the remaining routes will be finalized shortly. Under the proposed system, only one company will be allowed to operate on a single route, with the number of buses on each route fixed. Operations will commence only after verifying fitness certificates and all other required documents and compliance requirements of the buses.
