Biman Bangladesh Airlines has unveiled plans to lease up to 10 aircraft by 2027 to bolster its international network and address capacity constraints ahead of the arrival of newly ordered Boeing aircraft from 2031. State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat announced the move, emphasizing the need to increase flight frequencies and explore new destinations.
The national flag carrier intends to lease three aircraft initially, with the possibility of increasing the number based on operational needs and route expansion strategies. This initiative could increase Biman's fleet from 19 to 29 aircraft by 2027, representing a 52.6 percent increase.
Millat highlighted the government's commitment to transparency in the leasing process. An international consultant will be appointed to oversee the process, with around 40 applications already received. The consultant will ensure the leasing process is conducted transparently and efficiently.
The leasing plan is separate from Biman's procurement of 14 new Boeing aircraft, valued at approximately US$3.7 billion, expected to be delivered between 2031 and 2035. With new aircraft from Boeing and Airbus generally unavailable for immediate delivery, Biman is turning to the international leasing market to meet growing passenger demand.
Biman has invited international proposals to dry lease three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for six years, with a target induction date of early 2027. The airline has set August 9 as the deadline for submitting proposals and indicated January 1, 2027, as the preferred delivery date.
The government is also exploring the acquisition of Airbus aircraft as part of a longer-term strategy to develop a sustainable mixed fleet. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam emphasized the government's intention to procure aircraft from both major manufacturers, prioritizing Bangladesh's national interests in investment and procurement decisions.
