The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the quake, which hit 10 kilometers below the Earth's surface. Both the Philippines and neighboring Indonesia issued tsunami warnings, though no major damage has been reported yet. The quake was felt strongly in the Sarangani province of the Philippines and in the Indonesian city of Manado. The region is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for its seismic activity.

The GFZ initially reported the earthquake as 8.2 magnitude but later revised it to 7.8. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed a 7.0 magnitude quake and issued a warning for waves over one meter high. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported the quake as 7.7 magnitude.
