Bangladesh's chief selector Habibul Bashar Sumon remains confident about the squad for the upcoming Test series in Australia, despite losing several key players to injury. Speaking after the selection panel announced the team for the first Test, Bashar explained that the selectors had aimed to finalize the squad much earlier, given the Test side's recent stability and encouraging performances. However, last-minute injuries to frontline players forced changes to their plans.
"We waited as long as possible in the hope that at least some of them would recover in time for one Test, but that didn't happen. In cricket, you don't always get your best XI. We've selected the best possible squad from the players who are fit and available, and we're optimistic about doing well," Bashar said.
One notable inclusion is wicketkeeper-batter Jaker Ali, who was recalled after proving his form and confidence through domestic and High Performance matches. Bashar clarified that the decision to leave Ali out earlier was not due to poor performance but to allow him to regain form.
Despite missing out on the Australia tour, backup wicketkeeper Mahidul Islam Ankon remains in Bangladesh's long-term plans. Ankon is expected to feature for the Bangladesh Emerging team against South Africa Emerging team as part of the management's effort to prepare players for a busy international schedule.
On the injury front, initial scans of Liton Das showed no major damage, but further examinations in Singapore revealed swelling rather than a tear. Das will now undergo a phased rehabilitation program before returning to action.
Reflecting on Bangladesh's recent Test defeat to Zimbabwe, Bashar dismissed the notion that the bowling attack was responsible for the loss, instead blaming the batting unit. He urged the players to adopt a positive approach rather than reckless aggression when facing the Australian bowlers.
The squad for the first Test includes Najmul Hossain Shanto (Captain), Soumya Sarkar, Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Amite Hasan, Jaker Ali Anik, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (Vice Captain), Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury, and Musfik Hasan.
