Information and Broadcasting Minister Jahir Uddin Swapon highlighted the need for an appropriate authority to determine who qualifies as a journalist. Speaking at the 34th meeting of the Press Accreditation Committee and the inaugural session of the newly formed committee, he stressed the importance of an inclusive and broadly acceptable decision-making process.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the Bangladesh Secretariat, saw Swapon advising committee members to ensure their decisions align with the Constitution, existing laws, and relevant regulations. He urged them to exercise foresight, wisdom, and adopt an inclusive approach.

Swapon reminded the committee that their decisions should be broadly acceptable and not represent any political party but rather the government elected by the people. He emphasized the pluralistic nature of the media sector and the necessity for coexistence of diverse opinions.

The minister noted that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is a politically sensitive ministry, and decisions should consider long-term impacts. The acceptability of the committee's decisions would depend on the wisdom, experience, and foresight of its members.

Principal Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed chaired the meeting, which was attended by Secretary (Routine Duty) of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Md. Shah Alam, senior ministry officials, and members of the Press Accreditation Committee. The significance of clear journalist accreditation in Bangladesh lies in ensuring a fair and transparent media environment.
